
We are seeking to establish a pool of Education Assistant - Special Needs for permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2026 school year and up to the end of Term 2, 2028. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.
We are in East Cannington, a southeastern suburb 13 kilometres from Perth with approximately 570 students from diverse cultural backgrounds, from Kindergarten to Year 6. The school is set in spacious grounds and is easily accessible by public transport.

The Role
We are seeking a compassionate, dedicated and enthusiastic Special Needs Education Assistant to join our team in supporting students with high and complex needs. This rewarding role involves working closely with teachers and allied professionals to provide personalised support that enables every student to engage, participate and achieve success in a safe and inclusive learning environment.
As an Education Assistant Special Needs, you will ideally possess exceptional teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills to provide holistic support to students and teachers.
Under teacher direction, you would assist in the education programs and in promoting a supportive and inclusive learning environment. The suitable applicants will assist the teacher in the delivery of planned education programs to assist students to reach their full potential through the development of their academic, social, emotional and physical skills. Using your excellent interpersonal and communication skills, you would collaborate with teachers and other colleagues to create an inclusive education program that accommodates the needs of students.
As an Education Assistant Special Needs at Gibbs Street your key responsibilities will ideally include:
- Provide one-on-one and small group support for students with high and complex learning, behavioural, physical and/or communication needs.
- Assist with the implementation of individual education plans (IEPs), behaviour support plans and therapy programs under the guidance of teaching staff.
- Support students with personal care needs, where required, in a respectful and dignified manner.
- Foster positive relationships with students, families and colleagues, promoting inclusion and student wellbeing.
- Assist in creating a supportive, engaging and culturally responsive learning environment.
- Work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team, including teachers, school psychologists and external service providers.
The suitable applicants will ideally display:
- A genuine commitment to supporting students with diverse learning and developmental needs.
- Patience, empathy and the ability to build positive and trusting relationships with students.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team.
- Flexibility, initiative and resilience in responding to the varying needs of students throughout the school day.
- An understanding of inclusive education practices and experience supporting students with disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, trauma backgrounds or complex behaviours (desirable).
