We are seeking to establish a pool of Aboriginal and Islander Education Officers for permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2026 school year and up to the end of Term 1, 2027. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.

Broome has an interesting history based around the exploits of the men and women who developed the pearling industry in the 1880s. This history has created a population that is a unique blend of Asian, European and Indigenous cultures. Broome is rich in Aboriginal culture and is the traditional home of the Yawuru and Djugun people.

The Role
The role of the Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer is to improve the educational outcomes of Aboriginal and Islander students by ensuring they receive the educational and cultural support they need to feel welcome, respected, understood and cared for and giving them the skills to develop socially, emotionally, physically and academically.
To be suitable for this role, you should ideally be reliable and flexible, whilst providing support and effective assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, their parents/guardians, teachers, the school and the community through the knowledge, understanding and sharing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, language and culture. This role includes providing pastoral care and supporting students from low socioeconomic backgrounds who face learning difficulties and have low attendance.

Eligibility

- Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and liaise with parents/caregivers, families, teachers and community members and assist teachers to understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students’ needs.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of building culturally safe environments for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Demonstrated effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of culturally responsive education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or allied health professionals.
