The Role
As an RTO, Thornlie SHS is ideally seeking a highly organised, proactive and student-focused Teacher to undertake the role of Workplace Learning (WPL) Coordinator under the guidance of the Vocational Education Training (VET) Coordinator. This role is a teaching position with a strong focus on delivering work readiness, career development and employability skills programs to students.
All general Senior School students are enrolled in Workplace Learning, with each student expected to complete two, two-week placement blocks across Years 11 and 12 annually. The successful applicant would teach workplace learning and career readiness courses, supporting students to develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions required for successful participation in the workforce and post-school pathways. This includes explicit teaching in areas such as workplace expectations, communication skills, employability skills, resume and interview preparation, workplace health and safety and career planning.
The WPL Coordinator would also oversee the effective day-to-day operations of the WPL Program, including supporting students to source meaningful and appropriate work placements aligned with their Certificate II pathway and career aspirations. The role will additionally support the VET Coordinator in various aspects of the school’s RTO operations.
This role is central to strengthening student pathways and enhancing post-school outcomes through both high-quality teaching and strong partnerships with industry employers. The successful applicant should conduct workplace visits and checks in person to ensure safe and appropriate learning environments, assist with the induction and support of workplace supervisors, and foster productive networks between the school and employers. This will involve the use of a personal vehicle.
Ongoing monitoring of students on placement is required, including assessing logbooks and Skills Journals, verifying attendance and work hours and supporting students to successfully meet program and compliance requirements.
The role also involves liaising with key stakeholders including Career and Vocational Education (CAVE) Support Staff, Certificate II trainers, industry representatives, parents and students in relation to participation, attendance, engagement and behavioural matters.
The successful applicant would assist the VET Coordinator and CAVE Support Staff to maintain accurate records and databases in line with RTO and SCSA compliance requirements, and prepare correspondence, reports and presentations as required.
In addition, you should participate in meetings involving the school, other schools and workplaces, and respond to enquiries from the community and industry regarding the WPL Program.
