The Role

The Deputy Principal plays a pivotal leadership role within the school, working in close partnership with the Principal and current Deputy Principal to shape and strengthen the school’s identity, culture and strategic direction. Central to this role is a strong commitment to educational leadership, including the development and promotion of the school’s values, ethos and priorities.

Suitable applicants will ideally possess qualifications and experience relevant to teaching students with special education needs, including those with autism, intellectual disability, and mental health conditions such as anxiety, attention and behaviour disorders. A strong understanding of, and expertise in, evidence-based approaches to supporting students with Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) and other complex behavioural profiles will be highly regarded.

In this role, the Deputy Principal should foster a collaborative and inclusive culture, empowering staff, families and the wider community to share ownership of the school’s vision and goals. They should also display the ability to lead and manage change effectively, supporting staff through improvement processes while identifying opportunities to enhance outcomes for students.

The Deputy Principal will work closely with staff to provide guidance and leadership in the development, implementation and evaluation of effective, individualised programs and interventions. They would also play a key role in supporting teachers to respond to complex student needs using contemporary, research-informed practices, while also promoting a culture of continuous professional growth.

Overseeing key aspects of school operations, the Deputy Principal will ensure the effective implementation of the School Plan through strategic decision-making, policy development and the establishment of aligned systems and processes. The role also includes supporting the day-to-day management of the school, with a strong emphasis on staff and student wellbeing, and may include responsibilities such as timetabling and operational planning.

Suitable applicants will ideally display excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with students, staff, families and external agencies. High-level organisational and leadership capabilities are ideal, including experience in mentoring and developing staff, as well as a sound understanding of the Department of Education’s strategic directions, whole-school planning, review processes and data-informed decision making.

Experience in leading Student Services will be highly desirable, including case management of students with complex needs, management of disability resourcing, coordination with external service providers, oversight of behaviour support processes, and the development and monitoring of documented plans to support student outcomes.

This is an exciting opportunity for a compassionate and skilled leader to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students with complex needs, while contributing to both the educational leadership and operational effectiveness of a dynamic Education Support Centre.
