The Role
The Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO) plays an important support role by assisting teachers in delivering planned educational programs and promoting a supportive and inclusive learning environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. The AIEO works closely with teachers, students, families, and the wider community to ensure that education programs are relevant to both educational and cultural needs. They act as a liaison between the school and the community, helping to strengthen communication and encourage greater participation and achievement among students.
In addition, the AIEO provides mentoring and pastoral care to support students’ wellbeing and engagement in school, particularly those who may be at risk. Their responsibilities may also include helping to design and implement behaviour management plans, maintaining student records, and communicating important information to parents and caregivers. Furthermore, the AIEO facilitates community involvement in the development of school policies related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, conducting interviews or home visits when needed, managing classroom resources, and assisting with the preparation and maintenance of a positive learning environment.

Eligibility

- Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and liaise with parents/caregivers, families, teachers and community members and assist teachers to understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students’ needs.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of building culturally safe environments for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Demonstrated effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of culturally responsive education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or allied health professionals.
