This is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 2, 2026

South Hedland Primary School (PS) is an Independent Public School, proudly catering to a diverse student population of approximately 240 students, with 56% identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Our school is well-regarded within the community for its strong sense of care and connection, providing a highly supportive learning environment built on positive relationships.

Our educational focus is firmly grounded in literacy, numeracy, attendance, and behaviour. We deliver consistent, high-quality teaching through the Explicit Direct Instruction model and promote positive student conduct using the Positive Behaviour Support framework. Students also benefit from a range of specialist programs in Visual Arts, Physical Education, Health, Technologies, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) and Science. To encourage regular attendance, our dedicated School-Based Attendance Officer works alongside staff to implement proactive strategies and support processes.

Pastoral care is central to our approach, ensuring every student feels valued, included and ready to learn. Collaboration is a defining feature of our school culture, with staff participating in weekly Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) focused on data analysis, shared planning, professional growth, and consistent implementation of whole-school initiatives.

Differentiation in teaching and learning is a key priority, allowing us to meet the individual needs of every student. This is supplemented through formal literacy intervention programs operated daily for targeted support.

The Role

They should champion high-impact strategies, working closely with teachers to embed these approaches across the school. Using strong data literacy, we hope the successful applicant would drive decision-making, monitor progress, and identify areas for targeted intervention.

Building teacher capability will be central to the role. Through coaching, mentoring, and performance development, the Deputy Principal will ideally empower staff to refine their practice and foster a culture of continuous improvement. A thorough understanding of the Western Australian Curriculum is desired to guide its effective implementation in all learning areas.

The Deputy Principal should also contribute to operational management, planning, and whole-school initiatives, ensuring processes are collaborative, well-organised, and aligned with school priorities. They will ideally promote a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment, modelling positive behaviour and wellbeing to ensure every student feels valued and able to succeed.

Strong interpersonal skills are essential for building trust, fostering collaboration, and maintaining positive relationships with staff, students, families, and the wider community. The successful candidate ideally should communicate with clarity and confidence, promoting a cohesive school culture.

This role calls for resilience, adaptability, and professional courage when leading change or navigating complexity. The Deputy Principal should exemplify calm, solution-focused leadership and a proven ability to influence school-wide practice, driving continuous improvement and high-quality teaching and learning.
