The Role
Aveley SC is seeking to appoint a friendly and motivated Education Assistant – Braille to join their large team of Education Assistants. We value applicants who possess strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills which would be used to develop and promote the school’s values, ethos and priorities across the school community. The successful applicants will ideally be compassionate and able to work collaboratively to implement documented plans.
As an Education Assistant – Braille, the successful applicant would assist the teachers in delivering planned education programs and encourage a supportive and inclusive learning environment for the students. You would facilitate communication between blind or vision impaired students, teachers and other staff members and work under limited supervision in performing day to day tasks. The Education Assistant - Braille would assist with the general health and well-being of the student and help facilitate inclusion into the school environment.
Under limited guidance, the Education Assistant (Braille) is expected to perform tasks that include, but not limited to, the following:
- Use a Perkins Brailler, Duxbury Program or Mountbatten Brailler Machine.
- Transcribe Braille to text.
- Assist in blind or vision impaired students’ understanding of the education program through teacher directed tutoring, e.g. working on difficult vocabulary.
- Prepare for transcribing by gaining prior access to appropriate materials, such as lesson notes.
- Liaise with SSEN:S Visiting Teacher.
The successful applicant would translate Braille to text, prepare appropriate materials and assist the student to complete tasks requiring problem solving, decision making and choosing methods and processes to successfully achieve outcomes.
The successful applicant should ideally have some experience working with vision-impaired students, experience using a Perkins Brailler and transcribing Braille to text. The ideal applicant will ideally have excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills with strong organisational and multitasking skills.
