We are seeking to establish a pool of Education Assistant - Special Needs for permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise from Term 2, 2026 school year and up to the end of Term 1, 2027. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.
Carson Street School is the state’s only Education Support Primary School, and it educates early childhood and Primary aged students with moderate, severe and profound multiple disabilities often with comorbid medical conditions and sensory impairments. All have communication difficulties and most are non-verbal. All students require highly differentiated curriculum, specialist teaching and learning programs, assistive technology and extensive adult support to access their learning programs and to provide daily living requirements. Students have a wide variety of medical conditions which are handled sensitively by the nursing staff. Students graduate in the year they turn 11.
Our specialist Conductive Education program attracts enrolments from across the metropolitan area. Communication is a major focus at Carson Street School with students using various forms of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) including Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display (PODD).

The Role
The role of an Education Assistant – Special Needs is to support the Department’s main objective of teaching and learning of students through assisting teachers in delivering planned education programs and encouraging a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
Suitable applicants will ideally be expected to work under limited supervision. Education outcomes are determined by the teacher, or other professional, with the Education Assistant performing tasks which will require discretion in problem solving, decision making, and choosing methods and processes to achieve outcomes. Performance of these tasks may require activities within and outside school that result in supervision of students without the presence of a teacher. It would be advantageous for applicants to familiarise themselves with the specialised requirements of this role. It is preferred that applicants have a Certificate III or IV in Education Support or are currently enrolled in these courses.
