The Role
Based in the Cosmo Newberry Community (approx. 100 km north-east of Laverton), this unique Kindergarten to year 6 (K-6) teaching role suits someone highly independent, flexible and committed to working within a strong, safe and supportive remote community. The campus has an excellent relationship with the Cosmo Newberry Aboriginal Corporation and the successful applicant will work closely with community members to support students and families.
Alongside classroom duties, you may assist with campus operations such as breakfast or recess preparation (shared with the Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer) and light cleaning to maintain a safe learning environment. Any additional duties are paid at the relevant casual rate.
This role is ideal for a motivated, relationship-focused teacher passionate about creating engaging learning experiences for a 100% Indigenous student cohort, with a strong focus on literacy, numeracy and explicit instruction. Ongoing professional learning and support are provided.
The Ideal Teacher
We are seeking a teacher who can create a caring, engaging and well-structured learning environment. Strong instructional practice, effective classroom management and practical differentiation are essential.
An understanding of the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework will help you create a culturally responsive classroom. You will bring strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships with students, families and colleagues.
The successful applicant would work collaboratively within Laverton School’s improvement culture, engaging with evidence-based programs and constructive feedback processes. Our 2026 focus areas are supported by the following whole-school programs:
- Positive Behaviour in Schools
- Explicit Instruction (Scaling Up Success – based on Kimberley Schools Project and Teachwell)
- MultiLit (MacLit and/or InitialLit)
- Spelling Mastery
- Berry Street Education Model
- School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE) for Primary Languages
While not a requirement, this role may suit a couple or partnership, as there may be opportunities for additional paid roles (e.g., gardener, cleaner, relief Education Assistant) for partners who meet Department of Education employment requirements.
To support staff in our remote context, all new team members undertake school-funded 4WD training prior to arrival and attend a Remote School Induction in January before the school year begins.
The School
Laverton School operates across three campuses: Laverton (town), Cosmo Newberry (95 km E) and Mulga Queen (145 km NE). We are located on Wongi Country in the Northern Goldfields, on the edge of the Great Victoria Desert.
Cosmo Newberry Campus, on Yilka Country, is a safe, well-organised and welcoming school site supported by a strong Aboriginal Corporation. The community and school partnership is highly productive and valued.
Laverton town (approx. one hour away) provides access to essential services including a gym, hospital, police station, grocery store, 24-hour fuel, volunteer organisations, a sports club, café and takeaway options. Skippers Aviation operates three flights per week to Perth and with Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the Golden Quest Discovery Trail nearby, there are many opportunities to explore the region on weekends and holidays.
