This is a permanent full-time position commencing January 2026.
Staff in Education Regional Offices are responsible for supporting schools in their regions by promoting system initiatives and providing support to enhance educational outcomes of students in public schools.
The Midwest Education Regional Office is located in Geraldton on the Midwest coast. The 46 public schools in the Midwest education region have approximately 7,600 students and are a mixture of coastal and inland schools, including remote community schools.
The Role
The Midwest Education Regional Office are seeking to appoint a Home Education Moderator.
The School Education Act allows parents to exercise educational choice. One option allows parents to choose to register as home educators who assume responsibility for their children’s education during the compulsory years of school. The Department registers and monitors home educators to confirm that the educational programs delivered to children at home meet the requirements of the Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline and that the children are showing educational progress.
This position is accountable to the Director of Education, Midwest Education Region, for evaluating and certifying the educational programs and progress of home educated students. Home Education registers students from Pre Primary to Year 12. As this position requires meetings in the homes of home educators, a current driver’s license is essential.
With increasing registration of children with special needs and secondary students seeking alternative pathways, knowledge of these is desirable.
Home Education Moderators will effectively liaise with home educating families to evaluate their programs and student progress, ensuring that programs being implemented are adequate to the needs and abilities of the students. Home Education Moderators are often required to respectfully provide advice to home educators regarding improvements to their programs and assessment of student progress. Home Education Moderators require a thorough understanding of the Western Australian Curriculum, across all phases of learning, to ensure that a quick and comprehensive evaluation can be completed and reported upon.
The successful applicant will ideally possess high level verbal and interpersonal communications skills; the ability to effectively liaise with parents, other education professionals and outside agencies; and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare correspondence and reports.
