Across the state, Regional Education Offices are responsible for supporting schools and students in the metropolitan and rural areas by promoting system initiatives, providing support and quality assurance and ensuring consistency in the implementation of policies and procedures to enhance the outcomes of schooling. Regional offices are also required to ensure that each school within their area of responsibility complies with the relevant legislation and policies.
The Role
Suitable applicants will be joining the North Metropolitan Education Region’s School Engagement Team (SET), which is a key component of the Region’s efforts to support student attendance, engagement and behaviour, in line with the Department’s strategic directions articulated in Every student, every classroom, every day, Building on strength and Focus 2025. The work of the School Engagement Team is across three main domains, which frequently intersect and overlap:
- Student enrolment and attendance
- Student behaviour
- Community Partnerships
As the Exclusion Support Officer, you will manage an assigned caseload of not enrolled, disengaged and/or excluded students within the North Metropolitan Education Region. You will provide case coordination for compulsory school-aged students and their families (primary and secondary aged students) who are not enrolled, been excluded, disengaged or at risk of disengaging for the purpose of supporting the student’s reengagement with education, training or employment.
It will be your responsibility to provide advocacy for students and their families to access appropriate support services and ensure case coordination and processes are compliant with relevant legislation, regulation, policies, and procedures.
Suitable applicants will be required to review case allocations and undertake assessment of individual students’ needs in collaboration with students, families, key stakeholders and previous schools, to optimise success of engagement in educational, training and employment pathways.
Additionally, you will work in close collaboration with several internal and external agencies and support services including but not limited to, School of Special Education Needs, School of Alternative Learning Settings, School Psychology Service, Department of Communities, Department of Justice, Western Australia Police Force and Target 120. You will also support the team to provide consultation and advice to schools, regional office staff, families, and external agencies in relation to School Education Act 1999 and Department of Education policies. Specifically, policies relating to enrolment, attendance, and exemptions.
Applicants should possess good communication and interpersonal skills as they will be required to develop and maintain professional links and effective networks with schools, State Government, Commonwealth and Community agencies, youth, employment, education, and training services relevant to young people in the locality and across regions, as necessary.
