The Role

Roebourne DHS is seeking a committed and organised educator to take on the role of Pathways & Internship Teacher, a position central to our implementation of the Big Picture Learning Australia (BPLA) design for education.

This role blends direct teaching of interest-based, post-school pathways learning with guiding and mentoring students as they engage in real-world internship experiences. This learning contributes significantly to student achievement their International Big Picture Learning Credential (IBPLC).

This is not your typical secondary teaching position. The successful applicant will work closely with advisory teachers, community mentors, local employers and the Roebourne DHS VET coordinator to connect students with real-world learning experiences aligned to their interests and post-school goals. Opportunities in this role include:

  • Delivering structured, interest-driven masterclasses aligned to the internship and exhibition cycle.
  • Supporting students to develop job-readiness, communication skills, and reflective portfolios.
  • Building students’ capacity to take up meaningful work placements, internships and contribute to their communities through social action projects.
  • Supporting students to establish internship placements, work shadowing, and mentor partnerships.
  • Conducting site visits, duty of care checks, and workplace inductions with students.
  • Tracking student progress, support credential evidence gathering, and liaise with families and mentors.
  • Working collaboratively with advisory teachers to ensure internships link meaningfully to each student’s learning plan and credential progress.

We are looking for an educator who ideally:

  • Thrives on helping young people discover their purpose and post-school direction and is passionate about real-world learning and student-directed pathways.
  • Has experience in secondary teaching, career education, workplace learning or VET coordination.
  • Understands or is willing to learn the Big Picture Learning pedagogy.
  • Is cultural responsiveness and a willingness to work in partnership with Aboriginal families and community leaders and is confident in supporting students from diverse cultural backgrounds, especially Aboriginal young people.
  • Is ready to step outside the traditional classroom and into a more dynamic, community-connected role.
  • Understands that success in this role is measured by the quality and consistency of opportunities facilitated, not just by course completions or credential milestones.
  • Can remain focused and optimistic even when students have challenges, viewing setbacks as part of a long-term, relationship-based process.
  • Has the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a tight-knit team.

Eligible staff will receive a percentage of this payment on commencement at the school, with the remainder paid at the end of the school year. Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment.   

The temporary ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that may apply in this school.

Mobility appointments for permanent metropolitan and south west teachers

Eligible permanent teachers who hold a substantive teaching position in a North or South Education Region school, or a South West Education Region school* may elect to undertake this role as a 3-year mobility appointment, with a right of return to their substantive position.  At the cessation of the 3-year mobility appointment, teachers can elect to return to their substantive role, or transfer permanently into this school.
