This is a 6-month fixed term, full-time position commencing ASAP with possible extension

Kalumburu - meaning 'Path By The River' or 'River Crossing' - is the most northerly Aboriginal Community in Western Australia. It is situated on the banks of the King Edward River beside a long, deep billabong at the upriver end of Malindjar Gorge. The nearest townships to Kalumburu are Kununurra (565km SE), Wyndham (560km SE) and Derby (650km W). Road access to the region is via the unsealed Gibb River Road and dependent on seasonal conditions. Kalumburu is often inaccessible by road for four to six months of the year. Alternative access is by air and supplies are regularly delivered by sea.

The Role

This role will suit someone who is highly motivated, relationship-focused, and passionate about creating exciting learning experiences to ignite a desire to learn in students. The school is seeking an Early Childhood specialist, though teachers with other Primary backgrounds are welcome to apply.

The school seeks a teacher who is able to blend Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) with Play based activities while fostering the social development of our Kindergarten/Pre-Primary students.

The successful applicant will ideally be a conscientious, flexible, and innovative teacher who is committed to improving outcomes for Aboriginal students. You will ideally be actively involved both within the school and wider community, highly reflective of your teaching practices and willing to collaborate with colleagues, parents, and external networks to establish strong community partnerships.

Teachers and School Administrators employed at Kalumburu Remote Community School in 2025 are eligible to receive a temporary Attraction and Retention Incentive of $2 209 (pa, gross – to be adjusted pro rata for FTE and tenure).  Eligible staff will receive a percentage of this payment on commencement at the school, with the remainder paid at the end of the school year.  Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment.  

The temporary ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that may apply in this school.
