We are seeking to establish a pool of Special Needs Education Assistants for permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2025 school year and up to the end of Term 2, 2026. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.

Mount Hawthorn Education Support Centre (ESC) is a public school for children with special needs with a strong emphasis on reaching for independence. We provide an alternative learning environment to develop abilities, independence and educational, physical, and social skills and knowledge, in preparation for the future.

The Role

Under the direction of the teacher, suitable applicants will ideally utilise a range of skills which will include the use of explicit teaching, Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communications Handicapped Children (TEACCH), Direct Instruction, Team Teach, Key Word Sign and AAC. A sound knowledge of Information and communication technology (ICT) will be highly regarded, as computers and iPads are integral across all learning areas. Experience in supporting positive behaviour and functional skill development is desirable.

Suitable applicants will ideally have the knowledge and experience to work with students with one or more of the following:

  • A diagnosis of Autism and/or Intellectual disabilities.
  • Complex communication needs using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) supports.
  • Challenging behaviours.
  • Students with anxiety and sensory needs.

Applicants with a Certificate IV in Education Support will be highly regarded.

    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
    • Demonstrated effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or psychologists.
    • Demonstrated ability to assist with the general health and well-being of students.
