We are seeking to establish a pool of Education Assistant - Special Needs for permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2025 school year and up to the end of Term 3, 2026. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.

Gwynne Park Education Support Centre (ESC) is a school which shares the same campus as the Gwynne Park Primary School in the Armadale suburb of Brookdale. We are an inclusive school, welcoming all students and families, valuing respect for all people, cultures and religions.

The Gwynne Park ESC is a school, which opened in 1991 and across the school campus Gwynne Park ESC has ten air-conditioned classrooms. Gwynne Park ESC has a fully equipped functional kitchen, multi -sensory interactive room (Rainbow Room) with accompanying technologies and resources and laundry with ablution facilities.

The Role

Suitable applicants will ideally be dedicated and compassionate individuals who can work alongside a small team to provide support for a student with complex needs. This role ideally requires patience, adaptability, and a strong commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment. The suitable applicants should work closely with key stakeholders to implement individualised strategies that promote the student’s engagement, well-being, and achievement. Strong communication skills and the ability to build trusting relationships are important.

Suitable applicants will assist teaching staff in the delivery of planned education programs and in promoting a supportive and productive learning environment. Our staff work under general supervision and autonomously and are required to contribute advice and expertise, actively collaborating with colleagues to support student and whole school achievement. Suitable applicants should be organised, committed, and have a broad range of skills and strategies to meet the needs of diverse groups of learners with disability. Applicants who display a commitment to enhancing student learning through ongoing reflective practice and engagement in professional learning opportunities are desirable.

As a Special Needs Education Assistant, you should be highly engaged in the development of student independence through planned and explicit approaches to support their self-management and self-regulation skills. This includes involvement in the development, monitoring and review of student programs and plans. It is highly desirable for applicants to have knowledge or experience in the use of; Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communications Handicapped Children (TEACCH); Australian Sign Language (AUSLAN); Augmentive and Alternative Communication (ACC); BoardMaker; visual schedules; Direct Instruction (DI); escalation profiling; monitoring student progress; Positive Behaviour Support processes and the maintenance of student records.

  4. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents. 
  5. Demonstrated effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or psychologists.
  6. Demonstrated ability to assist with the general health and well being of students.
