This is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 3, 2025

Ngaanyatjarra Lands School (NLS) is seeking a dedicated and culturally aware Deputy Principal to join our Warburton Campus team. This leadership role is varied and challenging. The successful applicant will benefit from previous experience living within a remote community and successful practice within a remote educational context.

The successful applicant would provide educational and managerial leadership within the Warburton Campus and community by helping to develop and promote the values, ethos, and priorities of the NLS. This is a leadership role and experience implementing effective measures to address complex student behaviours and learning engagement challenges would be highly regarded. Ideally, using effective cross-cultural and engagement strategies, they will assist school staff and community members to accept and develop opportunities for improved services. The Deputy Principal should assist the campus Principal to facilitate workforce effectiveness in providing appropriate, meaningful, and targeted educational programs that show a culturally responsive approach to improving student outcomes. Aligning with the ethos and directions of the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework is imperative as this forms the basis of whole school and campus planning.

Experience and proven success in improving teaching and learning of Aboriginal English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD) learners is highly desirable. The NLS has a suite of approaches to teaching and learning based on two-way, explicit teaching that is inclusive of Aboriginal perspectives. This includes the Two-Way Science program and the ability to provide leadership in the school and community in this learning area is desirable. Secondary education across the school is based on the Big Picture Education approach and encompasses a rigorous and individualised approach to student achievement through the pursuit of student interests and targeted, explicit teaching. The successful applicant will ideally have an understanding of effective Aboriginal education pedagogical practices as well as trauma-informed practices and student support. Ideally, the successful applicant will be able to provide examples of meeting the needs and creating opportunities through collaboration with Aboriginal students, staff and community members.

The structure of the NLS comprises of seven remote campuses located over vast distances from each other, throughout the Western Desert region of Western Australia. An Executive Principal and the campus Principals form a leadership team that collectively facilitates implementation and progression of an overarching strategic plan, directly aligned with individual campus operational plans addressing the unique context of each community. Whilst the campuses are separated by large distances, they are bound together by the culture of the Yarnangu people and the school is committed to contributing to increased agency and leadership of Yarnangu students, staff and community members. Our students speak a range of Aboriginal languages and are influenced by deep cultural connections to Country and ancient family histories, as well as the impact of social change and challenges present in contemporary community life.

The Role

It is highly desirable for the successful applicant to have experience or knowledge of Collaborative Teaching Practices, Instructional Leadership, Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), CMS and Trauma Informed Practice. Applicants with the ability to manage Information and Communications Technology (ICT) within a school setting will be viewed favourably.

The Deputy Principal will work closely with the leadership team and Principal to complement existing successful collaborative and reflective processes which are driven by student improvement. Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills are essential as are effective leadership skills for the implementation of School Plans and Department of Education (DoE) initiatives.

Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment.

The temporary ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that may apply in this school.
