The School of Special Educational Needs: Medical and Mental Health
SSEN: MMH is one of seven Specialist Schools associated with Statewide Services. SSEN: MMH provides educational continuity for students whose medical or mental health prevents them from successfully participating in their enrolled school programs. The SSEN: MMH administrative centre is based at Perth Children’s Hospital in Nedlands, with metropolitan programs in hospital and community health settings in the north and south metropolitan educational regions and community health settings across regional educational regions in WA. All staff are timetabled to programs across SSEN: MMH, including campuses at Bentley, Joondalup, Murdoch, Nedlands, Shenton Park and Tuart Hill to ensure we meet the needs of students from Kindergarten to Year 12 and to improve the educational outcomes of these students. Our model of care, Liaise, Educate, Transition and Support (LETS), ensures continuity in education by supporting engagement, learning and transition in partnership with the student’s enrolling school or alternative educational program.
SSEN: MMH is a school that strives for excellence through building the capacity of staff within a culture of support and by creating learning environments where students can connect, learn and thrive. We encourage staff to share knowledge and exhibit self-reflective practices with a focus on quality teaching. Self-improvement is promoted amongst our staff through individual performance development, peer coaching and Professional Learning Communities.
Staff at our school are responsive to diverse needs within a holistic framework of family, students', enrolling schools (both public and non-government), other Specialist Schools, health services and community support systems. Staff at SSEN: MMH are continuously establishing and maintaining the vital link between health service, schools and family which are so necessary for a student’s total care. Our teachers work alongside interdisciplinary health teams, as well as co-teaching with teams of colleagues. Through such collaborative teams we continue a students’ learning journey and therefore meet their educational, physical and psychosocial needs.
