Applicants from the previous process IPS/SS914629 who were assessed as suitable are not required to reapply.

We are seeking to establish a pool of Special Needs Education Assistants for permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2025 school year and up to the end of Term 1, 2026. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.

Bob Hawke College enrolled 254 Year 7 students in February 2020 and has grown to a current enrolment of 1,612. Around 20% of students have an imputed or diagnosed disability, including Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Autism, ADHD, Intellectual Disability, Specific Learning Disabilities, generalised anxiety, and Diabetes. Additionally, 25% of students speak a language other than English at home, and the College includes 24 Aboriginal students.

The College was established as an inclusive learning environment from the start, including all students into general classrooms with flexible structures and groupings. All students access the core curriculum with necessary adjustments and supports, ensuring meaningful participation alongside their peers. Education Assistants support, but do not provide a separate education. Teachers are responsible for all students and use strategies like Explicit Instruction, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and differentiation to promote access, belonging, and success.

Inclusion at Bob Hawke College is rooted in our values, environments, and practices. We are refining a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) to transform mainstream education into inclusive education, recognising diversity and catering to personalised needs. Our students with disabilities engage meaningfully in year-level content alongside peers. The College’s Business Plan 2024-2026 prioritises Inclusion and aims to foster a caring, inclusive, and cohesive culture for students, staff, parents, carers, families, and the community.

We aim to create experiences where students learn both about the world around them, and of themselves. We seek to develop local, national, and international partnerships, creating meaningful relationships to improve learning opportunities for our students. We are part of the fabric of Subiaco, with a commitment to excellence and equity.

The Role

Special Needs Education Assistants (SNEAs) at Bob Hawke College should support inclusive learning where all students, including those with disabilities, are in general classrooms. Under teacher direction, SNEAs assist with delivering the core curriculum through adjustments that help all students progress alongside their peers. They should collaborate with teachers to apply strategies like Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and differentiation, and provide feedback on education and therapy programs, contributing to student progress evaluations. They are embedded within Learning Areas which enables collaborative planning, and dedicated time for teachers and SNEAs to work together. This approach promotes student independence, social connection, and learning accessibility, ensuring all students, particularly those with disabilities, are effectively supported. Suitable applicants will ideally have strong interpersonal skills, experience with diverse learners and a willingness to collaborate and learn.

All staff at Bob Hawke College should have the following attributes: They display care; are curious about learning and about learners; are invested in the College and the community; have a sense of humour; and are reflective of themselves and their practice.
