The Role
HHC are seeking to appoint an Advisory Teacher to work in their Horizon Academy Program and join their friendly school.
HHC Horizon Academy consists of five Advisories spanning Year 8 to 12. Our Academy is a supportive learning community that encourages students and staff to achieve their potential through the approach of ‘one student at a time in a community of learners.’ Our students become responsible and active members of the community through a strong focus on the principles of the Horizon Academy design for education, encompassing academic excellence, development of social skills, emotional wellbeing, respect, and values.
We seek to engage young people in learning through implementing the Horizon Academy Education design which encourages all students to identify and pursue their interests and passions. We want to prepare our young people uncommonly well for post-school life and we start that by engaging students in the community through internships. We aim to be strongly connected with families, and we do this each term through learning plan meetings and exhibitions. We have high expectations of each student to do the best they can and be the best they can be.
The successful applicant should be willing to share their interests, passions, and stories with the students. We are looking for a teacher who builds relationships and who is excited to find out what interests their students have, developing learning plans with each one and backward mapping the curriculum, documenting each student’s work and learning.
Those who are strongly encouraged to apply should be teachers who are committed to helping each student believe that they matter; who can see and value each student’s culture, talents and interests; who can help them fit by changing the school and the classroom to suit individual needs and who can help students work around restrictions put on them. That is, those teachers who never give up on a student.
The Advisory is a small community within the school. You will work with these students each day. The Advisory is like an extended family. Students are expected to be respectful, caring and productive members of the Advisory group and the broader College. The Advisory Teacher’s role is to teach, inspire, provoke, bond, organise and manage learning. You would negotiate student learning plans, convene meetings with students, parents and mentors, help students develop extended projects and prepare for exhibitions.
Advisory Teachers take responsibility for student learning across the curriculum including literacy and numeracy. You would discover how a philosophy of combining personalised learning and working together – one student at a time in a community of learners, is the key to creating schools where students are engaged in meaningful learning, and where academic progress is measured against real world standards. This is transformative and makes a positive difference in the lives of these young people for years to come.
Further to this, the ability to develop the numeracy and/or literacy skills of lower secondary students and students at educational risk is highly desirable. The ability to critically analyse National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) and Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA) data and the capacity to incorporate this knowledge into action plans to achieve meaningful student outcomes is also highly desirable.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the school to discuss the unique context of our Academy before submitting their application.
