
We are seeking to establish a pool of Special Needs Education Assistants for permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2025 school year and up to the end of Term 1, 2026. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.
Shenton College Deaf Education Centre (DEC) is a specialist facility for Deaf and hard of hearing students that operates in partnership with Shenton College. All the Deaf Education Centre facilities are embedded within Shenton College to construct an inclusive learning environment. Shenton College itself is a secondary school divided into three parts, the Middle School, Lower Upper School, and the Upper Senior School. Shenton College is in Shenton Park, on the railway line and only 10 minutes from central Perth by train. Currently, Shenton College DEC has 35 enrolments from Years 7 to 12. The students can select subjects and courses offered by Shenton College as well as engage in Deaf Education Centre programs that are tailored to the students' educational and vocational directions.

The Role
The role is primarily to provide educational note-taking for our Deaf and hard of hearing children to give them equitable access to the curriculum. The curriculum is for students for Year 7 up to Year 12 Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) level. High understanding of curriculum, strong literacy and grammatical skills are highly desired.
In this role, you will support access for our Deaf and hard of hearing students through provision of note-taking services in a range of mainstream classroom subjects. Working with mainstream teachers, other note-takers, Teachers of the Deaf, Auslan Interpreters, and Deaf Mentors, you should create high-quality lesson notes that allow students to be included in the mainstream environment and revise at home. You will liaise with both mainstream staff and Shenton College DEC staff to advocate for students’ accessibility needs and work together as a team to provide the best possible learning outcomes. Applicants with previous experience working with Deaf and hard of hearing students and/or prior involvement in the Deaf and hard of hearing communities are strongly encouraged to apply.
The following skills and attributes are highly desirable:
- IT skills, particularly experience with Microsoft OneNote and the school student management software (Compass)
- Can structure notes into well-organised and coherent sections, and use visuals appropriately to support student understanding
- Ability to summarise key lesson ideas in professional and grammatically correct English
- Auslan language skills, and an interest in becoming an Educational Auslan Interpreter
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team and build positive relationships with staff and students

- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
- Demonstrated effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or psychologists.
- Demonstrated ability to assist with the general health and well being of students.
