The Role
The Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO) plays a crucial role in fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment for our Aboriginal students. As a liaison between the school and community, the AIEO works closely with teachers, students and families to develop culturally relevant educational programs that empower our Aboriginal students to reach their full potential.
The AIEO assists teachers in delivering the literacy intervention program, working with students 1:1, and within the classroom setting. The suitable applicants will be able to confidently support students’ literacy and numeracy skills, following a strict timetable to ensure all students are receiving support at their point of need.
The AIEO will be responsible for coordinating whole school and small group events such as NAIDOC week, incursions and access to external resources to support our staff and students. The AIEO is a valuable member of the student services team, collaborating with the School Chaplain, Deputy Principal and wider staff and agencies to ensure a wrap around service is provided to our students. Assisting with food parcels, breakfasts, lunches and behaviour and engagement as well as attendance is important to the role.
Developing strong ties with the local community and facilitating parent and student voice through our Cultural Committee is also an important part of the role. The AIEO is paramount in the facilitation of the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework.
With a deep understanding of Aboriginal culture and history, the AIEO brings a unique perspective to the school community, promoting respect, understanding and harmony. Through mentoring and pastoral care, the AIEO also provides support and guidance to Aboriginal students to encourage participation and achievement in the classroom.
