The Role
Teachers in the Hedland SHS English team are focused on facilitating outstanding student outcomes and empowering every learner. We are a collaborative, supportive and close-knit team in a way that only a high-quality regional school can be. Our data-informed practice ensures improvement for all students.
The Literacy Specialist will be a critical part of the English team, but will also lead Hedland SHS staff to improve literacy outcomes for students in all curriculum areas.
The successful applicant will have a deep knowledge of literacy diagnostic testing and intervention programs, with a proven ability to improve student literacy levels. They will design and implement suitable intervention programs suited to student need, including but not limited to individual student literacy planning, small group interventions, NAPLAN/OLNA preparation programs and whole class literacy support planning. It is envisaged these programs will be developed to cater for students in all cohorts and learning areas.
As an expert practitioner you will ideally deomonstrate commitment to excellence in teaching, ensuring the learning needs of all students are met. You will lead the development of innovative classroom literacy practices to provide integrated, personalised, authentic and relevant literacy learning experiences for students.
The role may also require the delivery of targeted literacy professional learning for other Hedland SHS staff and supporting learning areas to design and implement whole-school literacy initiatives.
This position is a full time FTE with the successful applicant teaching a 0.6 FTE in the English learning area and 0.4 FTE as the Literacy Specialist.

Teachers and School Administrators employed at Hedland Senior High School in 2025 are eligible to receive a temporary Attraction and Retention Incentive of $4 677 (pa, gross – to be adjusted pro rata for FTE and tenure). Eligible staff will receive a percentage of this payment on commencement at the school, with the remainder paid at the end of the school year. Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment. The temporary ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that may apply in this school.

Mobility appointments for permanent metropolitan and south west teachers
Eligible permanent teachers who hold a substantive teaching position in a North or South Education Region school, or a South West Education Region school* may elect to undertake this role as a 3-year mobility appointment, with a right of return to their substantive position. At the cessation of the 3-year mobility appointment, teachers can elect to return to their substantive role, or transfer permanently into this school.
