The Role
At Beaconsfield PS we firmly believe every student in our school is vitally important and has the ability for success. There are currently 568 students across Kindergarten to Year 6, with 70 of these in the Intensive English Centre (IEC).
Over 25 different languages are represented by students with English as an Additional Language/ Dialect (EAL/D) across mainstream classes. The Beaconsfield IEC is an integral and highly valued part of our school with students currently enrolled in 5 classes. We deliver a specialised age-appropriate program using the EAL/D Progress Maps to support students using Standard Australian English.
Suitable applicants should display an understanding of the complex needs of EAL/D students and their families to promote respectful, reciprocal cross-cultural relationships. They should have strong interpersonal skills to promote the school values of inclusivity and diversity, foster positive relationships with families and their children and liaise with stakeholders when required.
Applicants will ideally have good organisational skills and initiative to assist with the delivery of the program, which may include working with small groups and individuals.
Suitable applicants will support EAL/D students through assisting teachers to deliver appropriate EAL/D curriculum, pedagogy and assessment practices. They assist the teacher in the delivery of planned education programs, including identifying and representing educational and cultural needs of EAL/D students by providing advice on program content relating to the student’s first culture.
Ethnic Educational Assistants (EEAs) assist in the design, implementation and recording of individual or group education plans, in consultation with teachers, parents and where appropriate other professionals. EEAs mentor and offer pastoral care to ensure the EAL/D students’ participation and achievement in the school environment, as well as through interpreting and/or translating according to their specific needs and their parents or caregivers..
