This is a permanent part-time (0.2FTE) position commencing Term 2, 2025
Calista Primary School (PS) is an Independent Public School located in the City of Kwinana. We have large grounds which comprise some areas of natural bushland and some set aside for gardening and outdoor activities. We also have an outdoor classroom. We are a Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) school, and this underpins all that we do both within and outside of the classroom.
We have been working extensively on our knowledge and understanding of cultural inclusivity and endeavour to ensure that our practices meet the needs of our students from diverse cultures and backgrounds. We run the YAC program with our Indigenous Year 3-6 students and are involved in the Polly Farmer Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) project in collaboration with Gilmore College. We also have a strong focus on the health and wellbeing of our students through working in collaboration with both the Earbus and more recently with Moorditj Koort.
We have a Cultural Inclusivity Leader (CIL) whose focus it is to establish culturally responsive practices, programs and ways of learning across our school through collaboration with various agencies and the Department of Education. We currently have 57 Aboriginal students enrolled from Kindergarten to Year 6 (K-6).

The Role
The Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO) plays a crucial role in fostering and collaborating in the development of a supportive and inclusive learning environment for our aboriginal students. A deep knowledge and understanding of both our local community and more specifically that of Calista PS will be highly regarded. We would like someone with this contextual background in this role. They will need to be able to build relationships with our students and families and bring their local cultural knowledge and understanding to the role.
Through the provision of mentoring and pastoral care they will provide support and guidance to our students both inside and outside of the classroom boundaries. For this reason, you should have good written and oral communication skills. We are looking for an AIEO with an understanding of the local culture and history who can bring a unique perspective to our school promoting respect and harmony.
A keen interest and knowledge of gardening is highly desirable as we are hoping to encourage the development of outdoor spaces and indigenous plantings to acknowledge the cultural significance of these. It is hoped that this will encourage community to feel an ownership and sense of belonging at our school. Ideally, you will have good interpersonal skills and a strong local knowledge in facilitating the strengthening of relationships.
The AIEO will work closely with the CIL, wider school staff and the local community to develop the role over time. They will also provide direction in the development and facilitation of education, language and behaviour management strategies and programs both in and outside classrooms.
Ideally, being able to manage their own time and possessing good organisational skills will be an asset to the role as moving from classroom to classroom will be required. If you are passionate about Aboriginal Education and Culture and want to make a difference to our learning community, then we encourage you to submit your application.
