This is a permanent part-time 0.6 FTE position commencing Term 2, 2025
Bunbury Senior High School (SHS) are seeking a passionate and dedicated Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO) to join our Student Services Team.
At Bunbury SHS we are proud of our history and traditions, and we love the magnificent buildings and views; but what makes this a great school is the people. Our school has many outstanding and experienced teachers; excellent support staff; students with a range of talents and abilities and a committed and supportive community. As a school of choice in the Bunbury area we strive to uphold the traditions while we also go forward as a progressive secondary high school.
This desire to go forward comes from the school's motto 'En Avant' which has existed since the school moved to the current site in 1923. Student achievement is the focus for the school through the vision to inspire self-belief in our students. We achieve this in a values-based environment that focuses on learning, collaboration, courage, wellbeing and diversity.

The Role
The AIEO plays a crucial role in fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. As a liaison between the school and community, the AIEO works closely with teachers, students, and families to develop culturally safe and engaging educational programs that empower our Indigenous students to reach their full potential. With a deep understanding of Aboriginal culture and history, the AIEO brings a unique perspective to the learning environment, enhancing the cultural responsiveness of our staff and school.
Through mentoring and pastoral care, the AIEO provides support and guidance to Indigenous students, particularly those at risk, to encourage participation and achievement in the classroom. The AIEO will work collaboratively within the Student Services team to identify students requiring additional support and respond effectively to meet the needs of students. Additionally, the AIEO will facilitate small group programs, further building relationships and fostering connection and belonging to school.
In addition to providing support to teachers and students, the AIEO also ideally works closely with the local Indigenous community to facilitate their involvement and input in shaping school policies and programs. The AIEO will be an active member of our Cultural Inclusivity Committee and Aboriginal Education Advisory Council. The AIEO will also ideally conduct home visits to discuss strategies to support attendance, engagement and academic progress; so that parents and community members are seen as partners in creating the conditions for our Indigenous students to be successful.
If you are passionate about Indigenous education and culture and are looking for a rewarding and challenging role, we invite you to join our team as an AIEO and help us to empower our Indigenous students to reach their full potential.
