Located in the Goldfields-Esperance region, north of Kalgoorlie, Leonora DHS caters for students from Kindergarten to Year 12. Leonora DHS has a long history of supporting the local community by embracing the Cultural diversity, that is Leonora. With 112 student enrolments, 79% being of Aboriginal heritage, the school embeds the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework throughout the curriculum.

The Role
We are looking for an inspirational, adaptable, solutions-focussed collaborator with a hands-on approach to leadership, who is looking to thrive in a regional, District School. The successful applicant will ideally be a leader who meets challenges with a solutions-focussed, creative mindset and a dedication to promoting, embedding and our School’s plan, values and goals.
Working closely with the Principal, the Deputy Principal plays a key leadership role, working to shape the school’s identity and direction. With a strong focus on educational Leadership, this role requires a collaborative approach, encouraging staff, volunteers, and community members to take ownership of the school’s vision and goals. This includes leading and supporting change, ensuring smooth transitions, and identifying opportunities to improve teaching and learning and requires robust people skills, with the ability to provide clear guidance and direction to staff, coaching and supporting professional development.
The Deputy Principal is responsible for overseeing school operations and ensuring the effective implementation of the School Plan. This includes decision-making, daily operations, timetabling, policy development, and establishing systems that align with the school’s objectives. The Deputy Principal also plays a vital role in fostering a culture of continuous improvement and wellbeing for staff and students.
The successful applicant will demonstrate a commitment to whole-school literacy and numeracy programs and a Connected Curriculum approach that promotes critical and creative thinking across all year levels. Additionally, they will play a key role in improving student attendance and engagement, working strategically to identify barriers to attendance and implementing targeted engagement strategies to support student retention and participation. Ability to respond effectively to challenging behaviours is required, additionally, an in-depth understanding of the following would be highly regarded:
- Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and restorative practices
- Attendance improvement and student engagement strategies
- Leadership in literacy and numeracy programs across both primary and secondary levels
- Two-Way Science curriculum planning.
- Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework.
- Knowledge of MultiLit and InitialLit literacy programs.
- Knowledge of Learning through Doing numeracy program
As a key member of the leadership team, the Deputy Principal must set high expectations and drive continuous school improvement. This includes mentoring staff to improve instructional practices, implementing evidence-based strategies to close learning gaps, and ensuring that teaching programs align with the Western Australian Curriculum. The role also involves building strong partnerships with families and external agencies to support student engagement, attendance, well-being and learning success. The ideal candidate will be proactive, adaptable, and committed to fostering equity and inclusion in all aspects of school life.

Teachers and School Administrators employed at Leonora District High School in 2025 are eligible to receive a temporary Attraction and Retention Incentive of $8 500 (pa, gross – to be adjusted pro rata for FTE and tenure). Eligible staff will receive a percentage of this payment on commencement at the school, with the remainder paid at the end of the school year. Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment. The temporary ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that may apply in this school.
