The Role
Under teacher direction, the Home Economics Assistant supports the teachers in the delivery of planned educational programs, ensuring safe and hygienic storage and handling of food and assisting with the preparation and maintenance of the learning environment including ordering and preparing food, equipment, materials and resources for use in classes. The Home Economics Assistant also undertakes regular activities throughout the day such as tidying and cleaning of cupboards, dishes, floors and refrigerator/freezer; laundering of linens and clothes; cleaning stoves, ovens, benches, floor and walls as necessary and disposal of rubbish at the end of the day.
The suitable applicant would also perform classroom and administrative tasks which include checking all equipment and reporting any discrepancies to the teacher, assisting the teacher with the care and supervision of students in activities and assisting with the management of resources by maintaining and updating inventory lists, monitoring stock levels and requirements.
There is also a requirement to clean during the vacation periods (school holidays) which includes thorough cleaning of all equipment; including ranges, defrosting and cleaning refrigerator/freezer, dusting all high ledges, tops and furnishings, cleaning walls and internal windows, cleaning, washing/polishing furniture as appropriate and cleaning inside of cupboards and storerooms, as necessary.
The suitable applicant will ideally be well organised with high standards of food handling hygiene. They will be energetic, flexible, and reliable with excellent communication skills to work well in a busy team environment.
