Derby District High School (DHS) is located in Derby which is situated at the southern end of King Sound in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Derby is 220km east of Broome by road and is 2463km north of Perth. It was the first town settled in the Kimberley. Derby is well supported with a range of government infrastructures. Its location near the King Sound and a number of rivers provides for many boating and fishing recreational activities - but not swimming!
Derby DHS is located in attractive and well-maintained grounds and surroundings. With an enrolment of over 600 students, it provides an education program for students from Kindergarten to Year 12. Students attend the school from the town of Derby and outlying areas including the Aboriginal Communities of Mowanjum and Pandanus Park. Students in Years 11 and 12 have access to a range of programs leading to secondary graduation. VET programs are offered in the school and in partnership with the local TAFE campus. The school has a very successful trade entry program and students are keen to trial employment and supported to connect with local trades. Subjects leading to university entrance are either delivered by school staff through a Uni-Prep course or through the School of Isolated and Distance Education.

The Role
Derby DHS is seeking to appoint a highly motivated and dedicated English Teacher.
Suitable applicants will ideally show the professional knowledge, practices and experience to deliver an engaging and relevant secondary school English curriculum. Applicants will ideally have the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding to prepare students for OLNA and NAPLAN.
As part of this role you will engage and build productive working relationships with students and be involved collaboratively with your colleagues to improve student results. We are seeking a teacher who is student and relationship focused, enthusiastic and innovative with the capacity to provide culturally responsive, engaging, relevant, and meaningful experiences while catering for diverse student learning needs. The successful applicant will ideally possess and integrate a growth mindset approach to their teaching and to young people. The successful applicant will develop skills in delivering EDI programs such as Spelling Mastery and Corrective Reading.
Suitable applicants should have the ability to work collaboratively to plan and implement effective teaching and learning plans that suit a wide range of learners. The successful applicant will ideally have knowledge of trauma informed practice and explicit direct instruction and experience in applying this into a classroom setting. Applicants will ideally provide excellence in creating and maintaining supportive and safe learning environment and provide educational opportunities and activities which enable students to achieve their highest potential.
With effective interpersonal skills, the suitable applicants will work closely with students, colleagues and the community to achieve the best educational outcomes for students. Ideally, suitable applicants will challenge and confront complex and conventional practices to provide successful outcomes for students, and continually reflect on their own practices to enhance performance. The ability to adapt with and utilise technology within the English learning area would be highly regarded.

Teachers and School Administrators employed at Derby District High School in 2025 are eligible to receive a temporary Attraction and Retention Incentive of $5 000 (pa, gross – to be adjusted pro rata for FTE and tenure). Eligible staff will receive a percentage of this payment on commencement at the school, with the remainder paid at the end of the school year. Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment.
The temporary ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that may apply in this school.

Mobility appointments for permanent metropolitan and south west teachers
Eligible permanent teachers who hold a substantive teaching position in a North or South Education Region school, or a South West Education Region school* may elect to undertake this role as a 3-year mobility appointment, with a right of return to their substantive position. At the cessation of the 3-year mobility appointment, teachers can elect to return to their substantive role, or transfer permanently into this school.
