The Role
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated D/deaf Education Assistant (EA Auslan) to join our friendly team. The D/deaf EA Auslan supports the learning of students enrolled in the Deaf Education program through modelling Deaf culture, Auslan as a first language and the ability of Deaf people to achieve.
The Deaf EA Auslan supports Teachers of the Deaf and classroom teachers to meet the educational and cultural needs of deaf and hard of hearing students with the delivery of curriculum in Auslan. They also support individual student or small group programs, with access to culturally specific resources and assist with organising and participating in a range of social development activities, including camps and excursions, fostering connections with other students with hearing loss.
They are a role model and mentor who supports identity development and cultural awareness for students enrolled in the Deaf Education program and encourage the development of student resilience by displaying how to overcome everyday hearing loss challenges. The Deaf EA Auslan provides specialist perspectives on students’ Auslan language samples and helps collate, analyse, and assist in reporting on Auslan language samples in collaboration with teaching staff and Education Interpreters.
The ideal applicant for this position should ideally possess knowledge and skills in the areas below:
- Knowledge and understanding of the Deaf community and its culture.
- Skills and experience elevating Auslan as a language, and Deaf community and culture, including the promotion and organisation of activities like National Week of Deaf People and Auslan Day.
- Ability to work collaboratively with others and at times, work unsupervised.
- Good written communication skills and well developed Auslan language skills, including the ability to effectively collaborate with students, teachers, parents, EA Auslan (Interpreters), community members and other stakeholders regarding educational and social impact of hearing loss.
- Skills and experience in working with individual or small groups of students in an education setting.
- Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective Auslan education programs for students and feedback on areas of need to teachers
- Ability to assist teachers in implementing educational programs.
- Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.
