The Role
Orelia PS caters to the learning, behavioural and developmental needs of Autistic students and children with, intellectual disabilities, mental health issues, and other learning needs.
All our staff are trained to provide learning for students with a variety of needs and disabilities. Staff implement strategies from Applied Behaviour Analysis and Functional Behaviour Analysis. Every student receives learning that is aimed at a high level of engagement to ensure success.
Throughout the year Orelia PS staff engage in professional learning to ensure we implement best practice in teaching strategies for our students. We have a commitment to developing and implementing whole school, evidence-based practice to effectively deliver high quality teaching and learning aligned to the Department of Education’s Quality Teaching Strategy.
As an Education Assistant - Special Needs you will, under teacher direction, assist in the implementation of specialised education programs. The suitable applicants will ideally have experience working with students with a variety of needs, including students affected by trauma, anxiety, and Autistic students. Suitable applicants should be experienced in supporting the needs of students with self-regulation of behaviour, and social and emotional responses. Experience working with students with challenging behaviours is highly desirable.
The suitable applicants will ideally have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to collaborate well with the teacher to create and maintain a supportive, inclusive education program to meet the specific needs of students. An understanding and regular use of safe work practices will be highly regarded. You should be organised and able to use your initiative to assist the teacher with the general care and wellbeing of students, and maintenance of the learning environment. You will ideally be able to work either under general supervision or autonomously, contribute advice and expertise, collaborating with school community members to support student achievement.
We are seeking applicants who are committed to enhancing students’ learning opportunities using their understanding of differentiation, intervention, and engagement strategies to assist students in accessing the curriculum.
Previous experience in supporting students who have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder and mental health issues is advantageous. You will ideally possess the ability to assist with students’ general health and well-being.

- Demonstrated ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
- Demonstrated knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
- Demonstrated ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.
