The School of Special Educational Needs: Disability (SSEND) is seeking to establish an appointment pool of Lead Education Assistants – Special Needs (EAL), for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part time vacancies which may arise during the 2025 school year and up to the end of Term 2 2026. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.
The School of Special Educational Needs: Disability
SSEND is one of seven Specialist Schools within Statewide Services. At SSEND we partner with schools and communities to deliver an effective, responsive and integrated service that supports students with additional needs to achieve their potential. Support is provided state-wide through a Request for Assistance model that matches the needs of schools to the skill set of our staff.
SSEND seeks to make a valued contribution to education through the provision of evidence- based strategies and practical support for students with disability and learning disabilities. Our Consulting Teachers work throughout the state, and support includes individualised student support, whole school consultancy, development and delivery of professional learning and creation of online resources and information. Our school mission, to build capacity of schools to ensure every student with a disability is a successful student, is at the heart of what we do.
We have teams based at Statewide Services Centre (Padbury), and at our south hub (South Lake Primary School). Suitable applicants may be based at either of these locations. Suitable applicants may also be required to regularly work across a number of metropolitan and regional locations throughout the state. The role involves state-wide travel with overnight stays and may include long distance driving, some of which may be in remote locations. Suitable applicants should ideally hold a current and valid 'C' class driver's license. Travel may involve the use of the employee's own motor vehicle with reimbursement available.

The Role
As EAL, suitable applicants will work collaboratively with Consulting Teachers, to model evidence-based interventions to school staff where SSEND is supporting individual and whole school requests for assistance. They will be responsible for assisting Consulting Teachers to deliver planned education programs and demonstrate outstanding interpersonal and communication skills to be able to successfully participate within a team situation, working alongside school staff, School Psychology Services and external agencies, often within a high-pressure environment, to assist with problem solving, and implementing strategies and processes to achieve outcomes.
Suitable applicants may also work independently of the Consulting Teacher to provide direct guided support to students and peers. They will display an excellent understanding of supporting students with a disability using evidence-based strategies and interventions. As EAL, suitable applicants will work with other Education Assistants to develop strategies which address issues that assist teachers in providing care and educational programs for students. They will assist in collecting and reporting data that will assist in determining outcomes for students.
