The Role
Como SC is seeking a dedicated, self-motivated, and reliable individual to join their team in the role of Gardener – Handyperson.
In this role you will be responsible for maintaining and presenting our school grounds in a clean and tidy condition. The Gardener - Handyperson will work to provide gardening, grounds and facility management to ensure a safe, vibrant and clean school environment. They will maintain and present the school grounds and gardens in an attractive, clean and tidy condition, and provide a suitable growing environment for both soft and hard landscaping, including turf management. The successful applicant will perform minor repairs and maintenance as requested, as well as other Gardener - Handyperson duties using safe work practices and in accordance with the Department's policies and guidelines.
The Gardener - Handyperson is responsible for maintaining the school grounds in a safe and tidy condition, ensuring a conducive external learning environment for students and staff. This includes overseeing the upkeep of turf areas, garden beds, shrubs, trees, and various soft landscapes. Additionally, the role involves maintaining hard landscaping features like courts and paving, marking sports areas, and conducting minor repairs in alignment with departmental policies. The Gardener - Handyperson is also tasked with keeping gardening facilities, equipment, tools, and machinery in a clean and serviceable condition, reporting faults promptly, and adhering to safe work practices.
Ideally, effective communication and interpersonal skills are required to provide grounds and maintenance advice and to establish and maintain good working relationships with staff and community. The ideal applicant should have the capacity to work unsupervised, with the ability to identify and recognise work that is required to be completed, and build a calendar of scheduled tasks, without specific direction. You will also be expected to monitor and maintain the reticulation systems, the marking of sports areas, and arm and disarm security systems as and when required.
Collaborating with the Head Gardener and Manager Corporate Services, the role contributes to the development of safe work procedures and conducts risk assessments as needed. Compliance with Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) legislation and the management of hazardous substances are integral aspects of the role, including the maintenance of records in accordance with safety guidelines.
