Derby District High School (DHS) is located in Derby which is situated at the southern end of King Sound in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Derby is 220km east of Broome by road and is 2463km north of Perth. It was the first town settled in the Kimberley. Derby is well supported with a range of government infrastructures. Its location near the King Sound and a number of rivers provides for many boating and fishing recreational activities - but not swimming!
Derby DHS is located in attractive and well-maintained grounds and surroundings. With an enrolment of 600 students, it provides an education program for students from Kindergarten to Year 12. Students attend the school from the town of Derby and outlying areas including the Aboriginal Communities of Mowanjum and Pandanus Park. Students in Years 11 and 12 have access to a range of programs leading to secondary graduation. VET programs are offered in the school and in partnership with the local TAFE campus. The school has a very successful trade entry program and students are keen to trial employment and supported to connect with local trades. Subjects leading to university entrance are either delivered by school staff through a Uni-Prep course or through the School of Isolated and Distance Education.

The Role
Derby DHS promotes the "Stronger Smarter Philosophy" of high teacher, student, and school expectations. School leaders are expected to lead this approach in all aspects of the school. The successful applicant will support the secondary school staff, as well as promoting positive high expectations relationships with students, staff, parents, and the wider community of Derby and surrounding Aboriginal communities. To be successful in this role you should be highly competent at establishing positive relationships across a wide range of contexts including students, staff, parents and engage parents and the wider community in the educational work of the school to enable all students to reach their potential.
The ability to mentor graduate teachers in delivering high quality teaching and learning strategies is desirable. In addition, experience working in an Aboriginal community and a passion for Aboriginal Education and improving the educational outcomes for these students is highly regarded. The successful applicant will ideally be committed to, and be able to exhibit, successful intervention approaches, particularly in the areas of literacy, numeracy and attendance across the school. You should have a passion for rural education as well as working with Indigenous and non-Indigenous students and their families to bring about positive, sustained change in student performance and achievement. Ensuring staff are provided with timely and appropriate feedback about their performance through regular classroom observations and performance growth (management) will also be a part of the role.
As the successful applicant, you will ideally be experienced in leading student services processes, SEWB programs and be able to work alongside teaching staff as an instructional leader. Experience with Positive Behaviour in Schools (PBiS) and an understanding or willingness to participate in leading school improvement processes would be an advantage.
The Deputy Principal will oversee the day-to-day operations of the year 7 cohort and develop processes and procedures to encourage effective communication and support the effective coordination of daily events and issues relating to duty of care. As the Deputy Principal you will lead curriculum and work with other members of the administration team to ensure teaching and learning programs cater for students of all levels of ability. You will assist the school to facilitate workforce effectiveness in leading and motivating staff in planning; directed at improving outcomes for students and the level of service delivered by the school especially in Explicit Direct Instruction. The Deputy Principal will play a significant role in the daily management of staff and student wellbeing as well as organising relief for teachers, timetabling students and following up on attendance.
