This is a 12 month fixed term, full-time position commencing Term 1, 2025 with possible extension (12 months) and/or permanency.
John Curtin College of the Arts (JCCA) is a leader in public education. Our college caters for 1750 students from Years 7 to 12 who come to us through the seven Gifted and Talented (GAT) programs run by the college for children identified as gifted in the creative domain, including; Ballet, Contemporary Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music, Music Theatre and Visual Arts, as well as through a small local catchment or participation in our Soccer Excellence Program, making the college a unique learning environment. For our enrolled students the college also goes through an additional identification process for learners gifted in the intellectual domain, and runs a dedicated program for these students in English, Humanities, Maths and Science.
As a unique learning environment, we embrace the individual differences of our students, and all staff must hold or develop understanding of gifted learners and learning difference to enable our learners to harness their personal excellence and to support their wellbeing.
Engagement in creativity and the Arts is as a vehicle for student engagement and motivation at the college. The Arts at JCCA is as much about providing dynamic opportunities for all students (each year we produce over 100 performances/exhibitions) as it is about developing transferable life skills such as empathy, creative and critical thinking, collaboration and the ability to communicate, all important attributes for any future pathway. The Role
JCCA is seeking to appoint a motivated and innovative Head of Department (HOD) - Performance and Visual Art - Music to join their leadership team. Please note that individuals with experience outside of this artform will not meet the requirements of this role.
The Music Department of JCCA is a large team that includes the oversight of a Gifted and Talented (GAT) Music Program, GAT Music Theatre Program and runs a Music Enrichment program enabling all students enrolled at the College who are not participating in the GAT Music or Music Theatre Programs who are engaged in the Instrumental Music School Service Program to continue to grow their love of music as an artform and expression of creativity. As such a strong understanding of the scope of music styles and genres and passion that reaches the breadth of these is important for this role.
The successful applicant should lead with open-mindedness and interpersonal courage, creating a supportive environment for both staff and students based on empathy and understanding.
As an exemplary classroom practitioner who can lead the implementation of excellence in learning and teaching across the Music Learning Area. You should possess an excellent understanding of the Western Australian Curriculum, assessment and reporting requirements for Years 7 to 12. Experience teaching ATAR Music to a Year 12 level and knowledge or experience in the teaching or management of Certificate III in Music is also desirable.
The successful applicant will ideally have high standards of professionalism and embrace opportunities for collaboration and partnerships within and beyond the college community. The ability to work positively and effectively in teams and be open to new thinking. This position plays an active room in our College Leadership Team, supporting and promoting the business plan and directions of the College in our community.
As an expert practitioner, you should have a commitment to excellence in teaching and engage in ongoing self-reflection. The ability to authentically evaluate the effectiveness of teaching practice and team performance is an important aspect of the role. Another key attribute is the ability to create environments conducive to learning and provide educational opportunities that are purposeful and relevant, catering for different student learning needs.
2025 will be an exciting time in this role, seeing the transition to new state of the art facilities and leadership and support of the Executive team in this change will be required to establish processes and procedures in the commencement of this new chapter for Music at JCCA.
