The Role
Harrisdale SHS is seeking an experienced and dynamic leader to assume the position of Head of Learning Area – English. The successful applicant will be responsible for the leadership and management of the English Learning Area, driving a culture of excellence in teaching and learning. As a key member of the school’s leadership team, the Head of English will collaborate closely with the Principal and other leaders to promote the school’s vision, mission, and values, ensuring high-quality educational outcomes for all students.
In this role, the successful applicant will oversee the planning, assessment, and reporting of student progress in line with the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA). A key focus will be on supporting staff to deliver engaging and rigorous programs that align with the school’s pedagogical emphasis and Teaching and Learning Framework. The Head of English will also play a pivotal role in promoting literacy strategies, extension programs, and enrichment opportunities across the learning area, while ensuring the provision of effective support for students with special needs or at risk of underachievement.
Key responsibilities include leading curriculum development, coordinating preparation for The National Assessment Program (NAPLAN) and Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA), and facilitating the performance management and development of staff through classroom observations and mentoring. The role also involves managing the English Learning Area’s operational plan, budget, and resources, as well as coordinating events such as excursions, incursions, and school-wide presentations.
The successful applicant will ideally have strong leadership skills, the ability to foster a collaborative and supportive team culture, and a commitment to continuous professional learning. With a focus on excellence in teaching, the Head of English should inspire staff and students alike, ensuring that the learning area remains at the forefront of educational innovation and success at Harrisdale SHS.
