This is a twelve (12) month fixed term, part-time (0.6FTE) position commencing Term 1, 2025 with possible extension and/or permanancy.
The Specialised Learning Program - Autism (SLP-A) opened at Kelmscott Senior High School (SHS) in 2024. Our growing program is designed to provide individualised, neurodiversity-affirming support to program students by fostering academic growth, social-emotional development, and overall well-being.

The Role
The successful applicant should adopt evidence-based practice and pedagogy to meet the needs of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) without a diagnosed intellectual disability. Knowledge of, and ability to, apply Western Australian curriculum is important to develop the personal and social capability of students and support their achievement across subject areas. The successful applicant should contribute to an effective collaborative environment through regular engagement with whole school staff. You will work closely with education assistants, mainstream teachers, Student Services and other school stakeholders. The successful applicant should have a sound ability to build and maintain professional and proactive relationships.
In collaboration with the Program Coordinator SLP-A, the successful applicant should provide innovative and engaging classes for our students and contribute to their sense of belonging and overall wellbeing in mainstream public schools. The successful applicant will ideally develop highly personalised learning plans and case-management goals to support student achievement in a mainstream setting. They should apply evidence-based, and trauma informed, individualised education interventions to improve academic engagement, organisational skills, social thinking, peer relationships and self-regulation skills. A thorough knowledge of contemporary inclusive pedagogy will be highly regarded.
The successful applicant should be highly motivated, student and relationship focused and dedicated to creating a safe and caring environment. With outstanding communication and leadership skills within the classroom, they will ideally create an environment in which students with ASD can thrive within the existing mainstream secondary school setting. The successful applicant should be able to apply their current knowledge of Autism and their comprehensive experience enabling students to succeed at secondary schooling from Years 7 to 12.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements in relation to teaching students with Autism Spectrum Disorder without a diagnosed intellectual disability:
- Apply evidence-based pedagogy for improving student outcomes relevant to the WA curriculum
- Knowledge and/or a commitment to participate in relevant training in positive behaviour support and a range of evidenced-based teaching practices to improve student outcomes
- Monitor, review and report on the performance of students by creating individualised learning plans, maintaining relevant, rigorous and valid programming, data collection and reporting systems
- Efficiently deploy resources and manage a team of education assistants to ensure program fidelity
- Demonstrate high level interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with colleagues, parents, students and the school community
