Derby District High School (DHS) is located in at the southern end of King Sound in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Students attend the school from the town of Derby and outlying areas including the Aboriginal Communities of Mowanjum and Pandanus Park.
The school has attractive, well-maintained grounds and surroundings and the music centre is relatively new and well appointed with band equipment, piano, percussion, keyboards, ukeleles, and a recording / soundproof practice room. Its location near the King Sound and a number of rivers provides for many boating and fishing recreational activities.
With an enrolment of 600 students, it provides an education program for students from Kindergarten to Year 12. With the school motto 'Diligence, Courage and Strength', students work towards high standards of academic and social achievement through participation and engagement in the school's inclusive, safe and stimulating learning environments. The young and vibrant staff brings energy and enthusiasm to classrooms and promotes community responsiveness, ensuring the interests of the students can be addressed in the teaching and learning programs.

The Role
Derby DHS is seeking to appoint an energetic and motivated individual to fill the role of Teacher – Primary - Music and join their friendly team.
The successful applicant will ideally display their proven impact on student success through curriculum delivery and practices in Music. We are seeking a highly skilled teacher who will have a detailed knowledge of the Western Australian Curriculum and the skills to engage students in developing their music skills. The school has a focus on performance and there is currently three active school bands and a school choir that practice regularly and perform in community events. The successful applicant will ideally possess expertise in planning and delivering Music lessons, providing a positive learning environment where students are inspired and motivated to learn.
The successful applicant will ideally be a passionate, motivated, and skilled educator, who is committed to improving outcomes for every child, every day, through our whole school approaches, explicit teaching and instructional strategies. The school has a coaching program that provide shoulder to shoulder support in EDI processes.
It is highly desirable that you are committed to developing positive relationships with students, parents, staff, and the wider community. Applicants should possess a strong capacity to plan challenging and engaging programs using an excellent understanding of teaching music and inspiring students to experience making music.

Teachers and school administrators employed at Derby DHS in 2024 are eligible to receive an Attraction and Retention Incentive of $10,000 (pa, gross – to be adjusted pro rata for FTE and tenure). Eligible staff will receive a percentage of this payment on commencement at the school, with the remainder paid at the end of the school year. Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment.
The ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that may apply in this school.
