The Aboriginal Teaching and Learning Directorate is seeking to establish a pool of Principal Education Officer - Professional Capability for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time vacancies which may arise during 2024 and up to the end of December 2025. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within 2024, up to the end of December 2025.
The Role and our Branch
The Aboriginal Teaching and Learning Directorate is seeking to recruit highly motivated and committed Principal Education Officers to join our team. We are seeking culturally responsive educators who are committed to equity, anti-racism and systems thinking.

As a Principal Education Officer, you will build the professional capability of school leaders, teachers and Department staff to strengthen culturally responsive practice in schools and across the agency.
As part of a diverse team, you will be innovative and creative in the design, delivery and evaluation of professional learning and facilitate transformative conversations with staff to drive system change.
Suitable applicants will model culturally responsive leadership and demonstrate extensive knowledge and understanding of the experiences of Aboriginal young people and the impact of these on their cultural safety, wellbeing and engagement at school. You will work as part of a broader system and draw on your knowledge and experiences to provide practical support and guidance for schools in strengthening culturally responsive practice across the domains of school improvement and multi-tiered systems of support.
The Aboriginal Teaching and Learning Directorate leads, influences and supports cultural responsiveness across the organisation. We support effective leadership and teaching to create culturally responsive schools that create the conditions for Aboriginal students and families to experience cultural safety. This includes developing and informing policy, resources and professional learning and influencing system strategy and whole-of-government initiatives and priorities that support and strengthen the cultural safety and wellbeing of Aboriginal children and young people. Our objective is to ensure that the research, design, delivery and evaluation of policies, programs and services are informed by national and state government priorities including the Aboriginal Empowerment Strategy and the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework.

- Demonstrated substantial knowledge and understanding of contemporary, evidence-based practices related to teaching and learning and school improvement.
- Demonstrated highly developed skills and extensive experience in developing and implementing successful teaching and learning initiatives, programs, projects or strategies at the school, region, network and/or system level.
- Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and influence change related to teaching and learning.
- Demonstrated highly developed conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to provide innovative solutions to strategic and complex problems and issues.
- Demonstrated highly developed oral and interpersonal skills, including the ability to successfully undertake consultations, collaborations and negotiations with senior officers, school leaders and other stakeholders.
- Demonstrated highly developed written communication skills, including experience in preparing reports, briefings and professional learning resources.

Eligibility and Training Requirements
Employees will be required to:
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter.
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement; and
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
- consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check if required
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
