About the Role
The successful applicant will ideally be a passionate, motivated and skilled educator who is committed to improving outcomes for every child, every day, through our whole school approaches, explicit teaching and instructional strategies. An ability to differentiate for a range of learning needs, including the specific needs of students who are learning English as an Additional Language is also highly desirable.
Wananami RCS is a remote school and teachers are required to be creative and resilient and possess a willingness to immerse themselves in the school and local community. Due to the remoteness of the school, an ability to be flexible and take on a range of roles within the school is also critical.
It is highly desirable that applicants are committed to developing positive relationships with students, parents, staff and the wider community. Applicants should possess a strong capacity to plan challenging and engaging programs using an excellent understanding of the Western Australian Curriculum.
We are seeking applicants who are innovative and possess high quality teaching skills and knowledge. They will ideally be committed to ongoing professional growth and development, support current whole school processes and be collegial, effective collaborators.
About the School
Wananami RCS is located on Mount Barnett Station in the spectacular Kimberley Region of Western Australia, approximately 500kms north of Broome. While Wananami is situated in the community of Kupungarri/Mount Barnett, it services three communities: Imintji, Kupungarri and Dodnun, all found along the iconic Gibb River Road. Students travel from Imintji and Dodnun by bus for up to an hour each way to and from school. The school provides teaching and learning programs from Kindergarten to Year 12, for predominantly Indigenous students, aged between 4 and 17 years.
Most students come from an Aboriginal English or English as a second dialect background and many are familiar with the local Aboriginal language, Ngarinyin. The school places a high emphasis on working with the community to provide students with culturally relevant learning opportunities. This is known as the ‘Wananami Way’ an ethos of listening and doing things together with the community to achieve the school vision for the students of “Thriving in two worlds to be Strong, Smart, Proud and Deadly leaders for future generations.’ Wananami RCS has been recognised for excellence in Cultural Responsiveness, exemplified in the two-way science program which provides rich, on-country learning experiences which are then embedded throughout the curriculum. The instructional model used in the delivery of all subject areas at the school is based on Explicit Direct Instruction. This approach utilises a teach first approach and ensures that students are taught skills and concepts in a step-by-step process. Effective, evidence informed instruction in Literacy and Numeracy is also a school wide priority, with programs such as Let’s Decode, Corrective Reading, Spelling Mastery, MacqLit, Prime Maths and Think Mentals in use.
