Burns Beach Primary School (PS) is seeking to establish a pool of Special Needs Education Assistants for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2024 school year and up to the end of Term 2, 2025. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2024 school year, up to the end of Term 2, 2025.
We are seeking highly motivated Special Needs Education Assistants to work collaboratively with our friendly and supportive team. You will ideally possess an openness to change, display initiative and be solutions-focused; always ensuring you are providing the best learning opportunities for our students.
Burns Beach PS is an inclusive school which follows the One School Model including primary students, education support students and students with additional needs within the one setting. Burns Beach PS provides students from Kindergarten to Year 6 with a high-quality education and a curriculum that continually evolves, to ensure that each child can develop their skills and talents to achieve their goals. This evolution will ensure that students are given ample learning opportunities within the context of whole school curriculum and experiences that will be relevant to their individual needs.
As a Special Needs Education Assistant, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to collaborate positively with the teacher to create and maintain an engaging, challenging, and supportive education program to meet the specific needs of the student, is highly desirable. Suitable applicants will, under teacher direction, assist the teacher in the delivery of planned education programs, implement individual or small group programs or demonstrations and be able to provide valuable feedback to support student learning. They will ideally be able to support programs relevant to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disability, Physical Disability, mental health and behavioural needs.
Suitable applicants will assist with the preparation and maintenance of the learning environment by maintaining equipment, materials, and resources, for use in classes, displays and demonstration, and assisting the teacher with clean and safe storage of items after classes and activities. The suitable applicant will support the teacher with the care and supervision of students in out-of-class activities and on school excursions. Suitable applicants will work across classrooms, so flexibility is highly regarded.
They will ideally be an active team member within the Education Support Program and the Primary program, promoting inclusion opportunities and supporting students in a variety of settings. The suitable applicants should effectively support staff teams and therapists to ensure students achieve their individual education program objectives. Applicants with skills in working with students using Positive Behaviour Support Strategies, Applied Behaviour Analysis and Alternative and Augmentative Communication will be highly regarded.

Burns Beach PS is situated in the beautiful beachside suburb of Burns Beach and opened its doors to students from Kindergarten to Year 6 in January 2022. In 2023, Burns Beach PS opened an onsite Education Support Program that provides specialist education for students with disability. Suitable applicants will be an integral member of our team, supporting the establishment of a school environment that excels in the way it cares for its students, and their families, developing strong and positive relationships with students, staff, and the broader school community.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents, and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
- Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
- Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
- Ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
- Knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
- Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.

ELIGIBILITY AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
- consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment.
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement.
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter.
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement.
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.
Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.
Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.
