Kalamunda Primary Education Support Centre (KP ESC) is seeking to establish a pool of dedicated, caring and proactive Education Assistant Special Needs for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2024 school year and up to the end of Term 1, 2025. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2024 school year, up to the end of Term 1, 2025.
KP ESC is looking for positive, motivated, self-reflective, and eager Education Assistants - Special Needs to join our team and support the vision and priority areas of our School.
We are passionate about “growing literate, numerate, functional, independent and employable adults” and have several opportunities available for the right applicants throughout our Kindergarten to Year 6 classrooms.
As an Education Assistant - Special Needs you will ideally possess the knowledge and skills to assist the teacher with the effective implementation, delivery, and assessment of planned education programs for students with special educational needs. KP ESC caters for students with a wide range of disabilities, so it is desirable for suitable applicants to have experience working with students with diverse learning needs. You will ideally apply knowledge of techniques, skills and relevant principles and practices for students with special educational needs acquired through previous experience, job learning or relevant qualification.
Suitable applicants will work under the teachers’ supervision and guidance, perform tasks that require discretion and judgement in achieving clearly defined outcomes. You should display the ability of working with individual, small group and whole class programs and proven capacity to participate in the evaluation process relating to the achievement of outcomes in students Documented Plans.
To be suitable, you would use your strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with your classroom team and assist in creating and maintaining a supportive education environment, to meet the specific needs and outcomes of students. Experience in delivering explicit teaching programs in an Education Support setting is highly favourable.
Applicants with knowledge in managing a variety of medical health plans, proven ability using positive management strategies, superior knowledge and experience in TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children), and a passion for Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) will be highly regarded.
KP ESC shares its site with Kalamunda Primary School and is surrounded by magnificent nature play spaces and bush land.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Effective written and oral communication skills, including report writing and the ability to effectively interact with students with special needs, and liaise with parents, teachers and community members and assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
- Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to contribute to a professional team and provide advice and evaluation in the development of the education program, including special education and therapy programs where they have been implemented.
- Ability to assist professionals in the implementation and evaluation of education programs, including special education and, if required, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
- Knowledge and understanding of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
- Effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or psychologists.
- Ability to assist with the general health and well-being of students.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
