About the Role
Roebourne District High School caters to students from Kindergarten to Year 12, with approximately 98% of the students being Aboriginal. Most of our students come from three main language groups, the Ngarluma people (who are the traditional owners of the land), the Yindjibarndi people and the Banyjima people. Our students come to school strong in language, culture and community connections.
Our Secondary team is a supportive learning community that encourages students and staff to achieve their potential through the approach of ‘one student at a time in a community of learners’. Our students become responsible and active members of the community through a strong focus on the principles of the Big Picture design for education. We are seeking an Advisory teacher who is committed to helping each student believe that they matter, who acknowledges and values their students’ culture, talents, and interests and who can work with others to identify, understand, and respond to individual needs.
The Advisory teacher’s role is to teach, inspire, coordinate, organise and manage learning. They balance explicit teaching in Advisory with a project-based learning approach and work to engage students in learning through Internships in the community and beyond. The Advisory class is a small community (17-20 students) within the school. Advisory staff (teachers, AIEOs and EAs) work with their Advisory each day to build relationships of trust, respect and care between the students, staff, families, and the community. The advisory staff support students to explore interests, develop extended projects and present their learning through exhibitions each term.
Successful applicants should be ready to form strong, respectful relationship with their students and families as we seek to engage our students through a student-centred approach. Our Advisory teachers support students to identify and pursue their interests. They convene meetings with students, parents and mentors to develop and negotiate personalised learning plans, where the student’s interests and strengths are central to their learning. Our Advisory teachers take responsibility for student learning across the curriculum, including literacy and numeracy. They work with their students to document their work and learning in a portfolio, mapped to the curriculum.
At RDHS, we have a clear focus on preparing our young people for their pathways into training, further education or employment post-secondary school. Students at RDHS complete Year 12 with the achievement of an International Big Picture Learning Credential.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the school to discuss the unique context of our school before submitting your application. www.roebournedhs.wa.edu.au
