Highgate Primary School (PS) is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Lead Special Needs  Education Assistants (SNEA) to join their friendly team ASAP.

Part time may be negotiated for the successful applicant.  

This role is bespoke to Highgate Primary School and is valued tremendously by all in our school.

As a successful applicant, you will ideally have outstanding people skills, high emotional intelligence, be a high-quality person, have a great sense of joy, humour and fun, be loyal, hard-working and flexible in your thinking.

You should be a key member of our amazing student services team, made up of three SNEA Lead, our school psychologist, learning support teachers, deputy principals and a student wellbeing officer. You should provide a flexible and supportive response to individual students emotional, social and educational needs. 

You will ideally build trust-filled, quality relationships with students, parents and staff. You will ideally have the skills to be able to support and encourage the students to participate in the educational program at Highgate, and achieve aims articulated in the Highgate PS vision.

If you are innovative, loyal, emotionally intelligent, proactive and an enthusiastic individual, who has a proven ability as an amazing ‘child whisperer’ that can problem solve, help students de-escalate, help students deal with trauma and are full of common sense we encourage you to apply.

Highgate PS was established in 1895 making it one of the oldest primary schools in Western Australia. It is situated in the suburb of Highgate, only two kilometres from Perth Central Business District. The staff are committed, hard-working and willing to go above and beyond for each other and for the students. We all share ownership, accountability and responsibility to the school community and the progress of our students.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • considerable knowledge and understanding of the delivery of education programs and/or behaviour management plans; and ability to identify problems and assist teachers and other Education Assistants in the development of strategies and solutions.
  • well developed oral communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to lead, mentor, coach, induct and train other Education Assistants and professional teams, including providing advice and evaluating education programs.
  • well developed written communication skills, including report writing, and the ability to coordinate, collect and present student data at a whole school community level in a meaningful way.
  • well developed organisational skills, including the ability to coordinate staff rosters and relief to assist in the delivery of effective education programs.

Eligibility and training requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.

Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
