The Role and our Branch

The Teaching Quality and Innovation directorate leads the implementation of the Quality Teaching Strategy as the Department of Education’s position on effective teaching and drives the ongoing development of our workforce. Its purpose is to improve student achievement by building professional capability and enabling teaching and leadership excellence. The role of Education Officer requires substantial knowledge and understanding of effective, evidence-based teaching and learning practices.

The Curriculum Priorities branch provides advice to schools and the system and leads the development of strategies, professional learning, resources and tools that strengthen the capability of public schools and the profession. We are looking for team members who have a thorough understanding of contemporary approaches to delivering the curriculum and other teaching and learning priorities.

The Department’s Two-way Science Program is an approach to teaching and learning that connects the Western Australian Curriculum: Science, to Aboriginal knowledges. Two-way Science supports schools to build relationships with local Aboriginal communities to develop place-based, culturally responsive teaching and learning programs for primary and secondary school students. The foundation of a Two-way Science learning program is cultural and ecological knowledge taught by local Aboriginal people to students on-Country and in the classroom.

Two-way Science provides an opportunity for all students to learn about science from the world’s oldest continuing cultures, to strengthen Aboriginal student wellbeing and engagement, and to build respect for Aboriginal histories, cultures, people, knowledges and experiences amongst school staff and students.

As Education Officer, you will co-lead the Department’s Two-way Science Program, including the ongoing delivery and expansion.

Within this role the Education Officer will establish and maintain effective networks and mutually respectful relationships within the Department and with Aboriginal communities, organisations and external stakeholders. You will also provide advice, knowledge, guidance and information on the Two-way Science program and prepare written correspondence for a range of audiences. 

As Education Officer you will also support other branch projects as required.

  5. Demonstrated highly developed written communication and presentation skills, including experience in the preparation of reports, briefings and other documentation to support and inform senior officers.

Eligibility and Training Requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter.
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement; and
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check if required

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
