Dalyellup College is seeking an Aboriginal & Islander Education Officer to join their incredible team!

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Aboriginal & Islander Education Officer who will be able to engage students in different programs, connect with families and liaise between the community and college by building a bridge between the college and home, with a view to increasing student attendance.

The successful applicant will ideally have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a high level of cultural awareness and be a strong team player.

They will ideally have a hardworking and professional approach to the role and should be reliable and flexible, whilst providing support and effective assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, their parents/guardians, teachers, the College and the community through the knowledge, understanding and sharing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, language and culture.

The successful applicant will also ideally have excellent time management skills and be accountable and highly organised. Part of the role will be to act as a liaison between the community and the College to support in the implementation of the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework and the college’s Aboriginal Education Plan.

The successful applicant will support all students through mentoring and pastoral care to ensure their participation and achievement in the College environment and the creation of successful future pathways and support in the implementation of programs.

Dalyellup College features contemporary, state-of-the-art facilities, located in the community of Dalyellup on the outskirts of Bunbury in the Capel Shire. It is an Independent Public School catering for approximately 700 secondary students from Year 7 to 12. The community of Dalyellup (‘a village in the forest by the sea’) is growing, with new land and homes being built. The College forms part of an Independent Public Schools Cluster together with Dalyellup Primary School, Tuart Forest Primary School and Capel Primary School.

Dalyellup College has a vision to develop confident, informed and active global citizens through the delivery of high quality teaching and learning opportunities in a range of educational pathways that support student needs and interests. This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively interact with students, teachers, parents, community members and professional staff on the provision and development of educational programs.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact on a range of levels in a variety of settings and with different audiences, including community members, teaching and other professionals.
  • Ability to contribute to a school-level team and to provide multi-cultural direction in the development of the educational program, development of language resources, and evaluation of education and behaviour management programs.
  • Ability to effectively assist teachers in implementing educational and behaviour management programs.
  • Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs to students.
  • Ability to assist with the general health and well-being of students.

Eligibility and training requirements

Aboriginality is considered essential for this position under section 50(d) of the Western Australian Equal Opportunity Act.

Employees will be required to:

  • Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
  • Consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment.
  • Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
  • Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement.
  • Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter.
  • Complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement.
  • Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.

Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
