Laverton School is a Kindergarten to Year 12 remote school seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Deputy Principal – Secondary with ability to teach Physical Education and Health, to join their leadership team.
Nestled in the far Northern Goldfields of Western Australia on Wangkatja Country, Laverton is a small town with many hidden surprises. Laverton School comprises three campuses – Laverton, Cosmo Newberry and Mulga Queen – this role will be based in Laverton Town.
About the Role
The successful applicant will work closely as part of the school’s leadership team to provide educational leadership, innovation, strategic planning, and promotion of the school’s vision and values in the school community. The position of Deputy Principal at Laverton School works collaboratively within negotiated areas of responsibility (including SEL, SIDE, Behaviour Support, OLNA, SCSA contact, secondary pathways, etc) and leading specific areas of the new 2024 – 2026 Strategic Plan (due to be released later in term 4). Whilst the focus will be on Secondary students progress at Laverton campus, you will be required to collaborate and provide leadership work across all phases of learning and all campuses. An interest in student wellbeing and social and emotional education is considered desirable. You will be required to teach a minimum of 0.3 in the Physical Education and Health learning area and support our Stephen Michael Rising Leaders program, at Laverton Campus in all years. The role will also include organisation of athletics, swimming and other sporting carnivals.

You should exhibit effective communication, organisational and interpersonal skills, and the ability to develop and maintain positive partnerships and collaborate effectively with others. A strong commitment to building relationships with staff, students and community is considered essential.
The Deputy Principal will work with other members of the leadership team to ensure teaching and learning programs cater for students of all levels of ability and to drive a culture of high expectations, quality teaching and cultural responsiveness. You will assist the school to facilitate workforce effectiveness in leading and motivating staff in planning, directed at improving outcomes for all students.

The Role Specific to Laverton School:
This role will suit someone who is highly motivated, relationship-focused, and passionate about working with staff to create exciting learning experiences for a predominantly Indigenous student cohort. You will need to be able to work with staff across K-12 and within a collaborative Leadership Team. To be successful in this role you will need to be willing to work with and become part of the Laverton Community by immersing yourself in school and outside events and activities.
As a culturally responsive and inclusive school, one of your key priorities will include building and leading positive relationships with the entire school community.
Laverton School is embarking on a significant school improvement journey, driven by high expectations for quality teaching and learning. The successful applicant will be required to engage with, lead and participate in this process using a collaborative, team-focussed approach. You will ideally have the capacity to build positive relationships with staff, students and their families using strong and effective interpersonal skills.
Our focus in 2024 is on low variation curriculum (under a one school, three campuses model) that can operate in an ever-changing context with high staff turnover. A willingness to provide leadership support with our existing programs and processes, analyse the effectiveness of our work through data analysis (supporting staff with effective utilisation of data), be part of developing a teacher observation and feedback process, and provide behaviour management support and leadership to classroom teachers, are considered essential. This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings.
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes.
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
- meet the Department of Education Teacher Qualifications and Registration requirements;
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
