Swan View Senior High School (SHS) is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Head of Learning Area (HOLA) - English to join their friendly team.

The goal of this position is to build a cohesive team with the English staff. The successful applicant should provide a leadership role across the school in developing and implementing a whole school approach to student learning. You should be responsible for the planning, actioning, and reviewing of English related subjects, as well as developing strategies and learning programs that promote engagement by students, resulting in improved learning outcomes.

You should be responsible for ensuring effective processes are in place to support the effective management and wellbeing of staff and students, ideally you will have strong behavioural management skills. As the leader, you should have the ability to utilise your skills to encourage and support innovation in classroom practice; to analyse and use student performance data to inform and guide teaching and learning; and use technology to stimulate learning and communication.

You should lead staff to engage effectively in performance development and classroom observation, with a strong focus on developing consistent practices across the English learning areas. As a leader, you should value feedback and utilise this to improve student performance and inform teaching. Key aspects of the role will be to lead, support and celebrate exceptional classroom practices and ensure high quality teaching occurs across both learning areas. As a leader you will continue to develop integrated, personalised, authentic and relevant learning experiences for our students. An ability to display high impact teaching strategies and explicit teaching techniques would be an advantage.

As an Independent Public School we have the opportunity to make decisions 'for our school at our school.' Our School Board consists of school, parent and community representatives all with the common goal of ensuring continued success and positioning Swan View SHS as the school of choice in our local area.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

  • Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
  • High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
  • Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs);
  • Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • meet the Department of Education Teacher Qualifications and Registration requirements;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement; and
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
