Eden Hill Primary School (PS) is seeking to establish a pool of enthusiastic and dedicated Education Assistants - Special Needs for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2024 school year. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencement within the 2024 school year.

The suitable applicants should ideally have a high level of interpersonal skills to enable them to work collaboratively with staff members in the delivery of planned education programs and promotion of a supportive and inclusive learning environment. The ability to monitor students’ progress in achieving educational goals and provide feedback back to the teacher is also part of this role.

Preferably, you should have capacity and interest in developing leadership skills to assist in mentoring and coaching. Candidates with the drive to learn and ability to model good practices for other Education Assistants will be highly regarded.

The suitable applicants should ideally display experience in working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder across K to 6 and possess a strong understanding of de-escalation strategies. Experience working with children with complex behaviours, mental health issues, vision and hearing impairment, diabetes and learning difficulties would be an advantage. Furthermore, experience in using direct and explicit instruction, MultiLit, Letters and Sounds, Zones of Regulation and trauma informed practices would be highly desirable.

Suitable applicants would preferably be able to work with a variety of technologies, be able to keep detailed documentation, have knowledge of low-key behaviour management strategies, and be able to respond to a situation quickly and calmly. The Education Assistant – Special Needs may be working with small groups and/or individual students in the classroom or another setting, to support their academic and social development during their time at the school.

  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
  • Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
  • Ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
  • Knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
  • Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.

Eligibility and training requirements

  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
