Appointment Pool
Belmont City College (CC) is seeking to establish a pool of Education Assistants - Auslan for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2024 school year. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencement within the 2024 school year.
Belmont City College has a proud 30 year history in Deaf Education with the current Deaf Education Program providing a supportive learning environment in the mainstream and inclusive education settings. Our Team includes a Program Coordinator, Teachers of the Deaf, Education Assistants - Auslan and a Deaf Role Model.
As an Education Assistant - Auslan, you will be an Auslan interpreter in a range of secondary classroom settings, including mainstream subjects and the Inclusive Education Program. You may also interpret events such as school camps, theatre performances, assemblies, and staff meetings. Education Assistants - Auslan provide support to the classroom, school, and community to ensure high quality learning programs are provided in an inclusive learning environment. This role can also include working in small groups to tutor students with teacher direction. The suitable applicant will be a part of a supportive and experienced Deaf Education Team and will liaise with staff to advocate for students’ accessibility needs to provide the best possible learning outcomes.
The suitable applicant should ideally have previous experience working as an Auslan interpreter. Competency in interpreting from English to Auslan, as well as Auslan to English. Having connection to, or involvement with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community would be highly desirable. Suitable candidates would ideally work collaboratively in a team and build positive relationships with staff and students. Suitable applicants would possess flexibility, professionalism, and a “can do” attitude.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Well-developed oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with Deaf or Hard of Hearing students, teachers and community members and where necessary assist teachers in understanding students.
- Well-developed organisational skills, including the ability to contribute to a professional team and deliver an effective education program.
- Knowledge and understanding of issues relevant to Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- Hold a Certificate, Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Auslan Interpreting (Paraprofessional/Professional) and/or NAATI Accreditation or have considerable proven experience as an Interpreter
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.
Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.
Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
