As a School Attendance Officer, you will play a vital role in ensuring that students are attending school and participating in educational programs. Your main responsibilities will be to assist school communities in finding ways to improve student attendance, participation, and engagement in educational programs. This includes monitoring student attendance, producing absence reports, identifying patterns in absenteeism, and working with teachers and the school administration team to develop and implement individual student attendance improvement plans.

You will also have the opportunity to communicate with parents and carers to verify student absences, provide advice on school attendance processes, and build relationships between families and the school to encourage attendance. Additionally, you will have the chance to work with school staff and the wider community to address obstacles to school attendance and assist in the development of community activities and projects aimed at improving student attendance.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Sound knowledge of current trends and issues related to attendance and education within a local community.
  • Ability to build positive relationships and work effectively with individuals or small groups of students experiencing attendance related difficulties.  
  • Sound research and problem solving skills including the ability to identify appropriate solutions to problems, such as those affecting student attendance.
  • Sound interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, particularly in a team environment.

Eligibility and training requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
